Anxiety / Stress

The bulk of my training has been focused on Anxiety Disorders and Stress Management. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is still currently the gold standard in terms of treatment for a wide variety of anxiety disorders. I practice a combination of CBT, emotional processing (which is essentially exploring the variety of emotions that often fuel the anxiety,) “inviting skepticism” from my clients and allowing their resistance to treatment to be explored, and demonstrating a variety of relaxation techniques that can provide short-term and long-term relief from symptoms of anxiety.

I have also found EMDR to be helpful with some kinds of anxiety, including specific phobias, and recommend this approach when warranted. Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder – whether it be from combat, sexual assault or relationship violence, or “lesser” traumas – can be significantly improved with the use of EMDR and CBT.

While at the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center, I created “Stress Recess.” It is a first-of-its-kind interactive stress management web site that can be a tremendous resource to you. It is available to everyone, although it’s target audience is college students. You can download free audio files for Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Diaphragmatic Breathing, and Yoga. That’s my voice in the Diaphragmatic Breathing and Progressive Muscle Relaxation files.
